For
once, I decided to tour my own country! I played not in Europe but in
the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I discovered that you don’t
have to go to Europe to discover beautiful places or play beautiful
organs.

I
didn’t tour in 2002; I was busy getting married! However, in
2001 I gave my first tour of Austria. Here I am at the Stephansdom in
Vienna, one of the world’s greatest cathedrals, practicing in
the afternoon for my recital later that evening (18 July 2001). The
four-manual instrument was built by Rieger in 1991.

Stephansdom program.

With
the Lavazza Chamber Ensemble (left to right: Jan Pfeiffer, Frances
Rios, Kristina Nilsson. Not pictured: Paula Oakes.), I've had the joy
of performing many wonderful chamber works (Brahms Piano Quartets in
G minor & C minor, Brahms Trio in B minor, Chopin Trio in G
minor, et al.). This photo was taken after our 14 March 2004 concert.

find a finer organist anywhere. And you probably couldn’t find
a kinder or more generous guy, either ...

so generous, in fact, that he let me take the Tabernacle organ for a
spin. Photo

Of
course, the organ in the Conference Center isn’t anything to
sneeze at, either. (And the hall seats 21,000 people!) With me is
Robert Poll, curator for all the Temple Square organs. Photo

The
grand 1875 E. & G. G. Hook & Hastings organ at the Cathedral
of the Holy Cross in Boston must certainly be the most beautiful
cathedral organ in the United States. On 12 June 2005 I had the
privilege of playing a recital there and premièring my Organ
Symphony No. 1
(Op.
176).
Photos used with the grateful permission of Cathedral
organist Leo D. Abbott.

drinking a wintry lager.

Suite Siciliana (Op. 145) was premièred by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Isaiah Jackson, at the opening concert of their 25th anniversary season. The soloists were Arturo Delmoni, Kristina Nilsson, and the composer. These excellent photos were taken by Euclid Moon at the Sanders Theatre (Harvard University) performance on 13 October 2002. (The same program was played the previous evening at the historic Stand Theatre in Dorchester, MA.)
