Leonardo Ciampa

Born in 1971, LEONARDO CIAMPA is acknowledged as one of the most gifted and versatile musicians of his generation. He is a composer, organist, author, pianist, and vocal coach/accompanist and has received high praise in each of those areas.

Ciampa's compositions include The Annunciation Op. 203 (cantata for chorus, soloists, and strings); Suite Siciliana Op. 145 (for two violins, piano and orchestra), commissioned by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston to open their 25^th anniversary season; four Organ Symphonies, a concerto for piano and organ; a piano quintet; and numerous sacred works.

As an organ recitalist, Ciampa has made six European tours encompassing Italy, Austria, and Germany. He is particularly admired in Italy, where he has played in numerous international festivals. He recently became a member of the Board of Directors of the Old West Organ Society (Yuko Hayashi, founder). In February of 2008 Ciampa was named Director of Music and Liturgy of St. Mary & St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Charlestown (Boston). The historic church by Keely contains an important organ by Woodberry & Harris (1893). Previous church positions included Director of Music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline, MA (2001-2007) and at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain (Boston) (1989-2001). At the latter he played the renowned 1859 E. & G. G. Hook organ (destroyed by fire in 2005), on which Ciampa recorded two CDs for AFKA records, No Room at the Inn and No Room at the Inn, Volume II. A third CD, Stained Glass, also on AFKA, will be released in 2008.

As a piano recitalist, Ciampa is known for his warm sound and colorful style reminiscent of the Golden Age of Pianists. He is especially noted for his interpretations of Chopin, of whom he has performed all of the Polonaises, Mazurkas, Waltzes, Ballades, and Scherzos. Ciampa collaborates regularly with the Lavazza Chamber Ensemble, with whom he has performed Brahms's Piano Quartets in G minor and C minor, Brahms's Piano Trio in B, Chopin's Trio in G minor, and many other works.

As a vocal accompanist and coach, Ciampa has few rivals in his expertise of the Italian and Neapolitan song repertoires.

As an author, Ciampa has written The Twilight of Belcanto (including an interview with the legendary soprano Virginia Zeani), Don Lorenzo Perosi (the very first biography of that celebrated composer ever to appear in the English language), Pope Pius XII: A Dialogue, and is currently completing Beniamino Gigli: A Commemoration 1957-2007.

Mr. Ciampa is the Founding Director of both Orient Heights Music and Coro Polifonico of Boston.

LEONARDO CIAMPA, Jahrgang 1971, ist zweifellos einer der talentiertesten und vielseitigsten Musiker seiner Generation. Er ist Komponist, Organist, Autor, Pianist sowie Begleiter/Repetitor und hat sich auf jedem dieser Gebiete hohe Wertschätzung erworben.

Unter Ciampas Kompositionen finden sich die Kantate The Annunciation (Op. 203) für Chor, Solisten und Streichinstrumente, die Suite Siciliana (Op. 145) für zwei Violinen, Klavier und Orchester (vom Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston anlässlich seines 25jährigen Bestandsjubiläums im Jahre 2002 uraufgeführt), vier Orgelsymphonien, ein Konzert für Klavier und Orgel, ein Klavierquintett und viele Kirchenkompositionen.

Ciampa, der vor allem von den Heiller-Schülerinnen Yuko Hayashi und Christa Rakich im Orgelspiel ausgebildet wurde, zählt zu den wichtigsten Organisten im Raum Boston. Er hat bereits sechs Orgelkonzerttourneen durch Europa absolviert und ist besonders in Italien bekannt, wo er jährlich auf wichtigen internationalen Festivals spielt. Er ist Vorstandsmitglied der von Yuko Hayashi gegründeten Old West Organ Society. Seit Februar 2008 ist Ciampa Musik- und Liturgiedirektor der Kirche St. Mary and Catherine in Charlestown, Boston. Diese von Keely erbaute historische Kirche enthält eine wichtig Orgel von Woodberry & Harris (1893). Auch früher bekleidete Ciampa verschiedene Kirchenämter; insbesondere war er Musikdirektor der St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline, Massachusetts (2001-2007) und der First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, Boston (1989-2001). In Letzterer hat er an der berühmter Orgel von E. & G. G. Hook aus dem Jahre 1859 (sie wurde 2005 durch eine Brandkatastrophe zerstört) gespielt und zwei CDs für AFKA Records, nämlich No Room at the Inn und No Room at the Inn, Volume II, aufgenommen. Eine dritte CD, Stained Glass, wird 2008 — ebenfalls bei AFKA — herauskommen.

Was sein Klavierspiel betrifft, so erinnern Ciampas farbiger Klang und sein warmer Stil an das "goldene Zeitalter der Pianisten". Bekannt sind vor allem seine Interpretationen von Chopin, dessen sämtliche Polonaisen, Mazurken, Walzer, Balladen und Scherzos er gespielt hat. Ciampa arbeitet regelmäßig mit dem Lavazza Chamber Ensemble zusammen, mit dem er die Klavierquartette in G-Moll und C-Moll von Brahms, das Trio von Chopin und viele andere Werke aufgeführt hat. Ciampa ist einer der erfahrensten und angesehensten Gesangsrepetitoren und -begleiter und hat sich als führender Experte Bostons für das italienische — und insbesondere das neapolitanische — Lied etabliert.

Ciampa ist Autor von vier Büchern, darunter "The Twilight of Belcanto" (das 2005 seine zweite Auflage erlebte) und "Don Lorenzo Perosi" (die erste englischsprachige Biographie dieses Komponisten), und vollendet derzeit das Werk "Beniamino Gigli: A Commemoration 1957-2007."

Come concertista di pianoforte, Ciampa è noto per il suono colorito e lo stile caloroso che richiamano l'età d'oro dei Pianisti. In particolare si notano le sue interpretazioni di Chopin, di cui ha eseguito tutte le Polacche, le Mazurche, i Valzer, le Ballate, e gli Scherzi. Ciampa collabora regolarmente con la Lavazza Chamber Ensemble, con cui ha eseguito i Quartetti in sol minore e do minore ed il Trio in si maggiore di Brahms, il Trio in sol minore di Chopin, ed alcuni altri lavori. Fra i ripassatori e gli accompagnatori del canto italiano e di quello napoletano, Ciampa è certamente il più esperto di Boston.
